At the start
Rubbing the eyes at the early morning sun shine, opening one of the gates of the only 24/7 mosque in Milan, stepped out a man of about 26 to 28 years of age, starring the sky and uttering his silent supplication. Being taller than usual he looked droopy and his oval face a bit swelled at his right chin making his Dutch cut look asymmetric. Almost having his shoes worn, he takes a look at his phone. It was 6 AM, it was only him from 5 AM after the Imam left, he remained in the mosque till sunrise. The security closed the door after asking him whether he is leaving or was he going to stay.
While the walking ahead he says to himself ‘ hmm, a day I’m completely free, let’s see where’s the nearest Halal café, I’m starving’ with this he switched on his mobile data but before he could hit the browser, a dialogue box appeared, which said ‘Your device has been abducted, you will receive instructions to fix this issue with in a few seconds, do not switch off your device’. He straightened himself from the drowsy feeling but this very confusing situation didn’t confuse him instead he kept starring at his screen and thought about the safety and privacy of the devices he owned, he wasn’t much of an expert in smart appliance but he tried to utmost utilize them. A second dialogue box snapped him out of his thoughts, now it said ‘Hold the phone at your ear and listen carefully to the instructions after the beep’.
Right at the moment when the phone beeped, came to his sight a bench in front of a flower shop that had yet to be opened . Holding his phone to his ear, he sat on the bench admiring the play of natural scent that followed around the bench but it wasn’t long that he got interrupted by a deep African-English voice which made an attentive frown on his face, seemed like something was really wrong.
chapter 1: IMPOSED IDENTITY
“Gray, don’t hang up its Alfa Blue here, I know that after all that happened to you, you are trying to keep low and trust me it’s the best thing you can do now. Don’t try contacting or approaching me considering both our safety until I notify, All essential details will be uploaded on your phone, wait for your phone to get rebooted and don’t fly overseas for a week, it takes sometime to establish an identity. Lastly stay away from local police and 3C because according to them you are dead ” with this his phone beeped and a dialogue box on the screen started rebooting his device. A series of questions ran through his head but he was too hungry for thinking about what he heard.
It felt a bit annoying to him that at the moment there were no cafe in his sight, only a hotel that even though looked pretty expensive for his card he would have approached but sadly it wasn’t opened yet, a big signboard stating that its closed hung against the glass door. As he started to look around for restaurants around, came to his sight a man in typical uniform type white shirt and black trouser, of about 40-45 age, who crossed the silent road and was advancing towards him. Fear worked in him and made him almost standing up from the bench but when he saw the man stopping at the door of the flower shop and unlocking it, he was relieved but his stomach growled out of emptiness which caused him to sit back on the bench.
At the moment his phone vibrated and gave the message that it was rebooted. He was very tempted to reach out for the browser and the time taking to restart was only costing his patience followed by hunger. The phone restarted with bad news, firstly the battery charge was only ten percent, secondly a text message said that his mobile data cost him fifteen Euro, where his monthly pack was twenty five, he wasn’t sure whether to use his data now and the place where he was there was no hope of free Wi-Fi and all his hesitation cost half of his charge but this wasn’t the end of troublesome luck bothering him.
Unexpectedly his phone rang from an unknown number and all he could do was pick the phone up or else all the charge was going to be eaten up.“Salam-Alaikum, Mosh…ehh...pronto? ”(literally ‘ready’ in Italian) a female voice answered Gray’s enquiry in Italian “Sir, I’m calling from the Imperial inn, you’re customer 234xxxx0 reserved a room a week ago, you have received a package, do you want it in your room or put it in our customer safe , it charges 1 Euro only?. “No just let it in my room” replied Gray. The phone ended with a thanks from the other side and let Gray use his last amperes of charge to click his browser icon. He couldn’t finish typing and the screen went black, flashing a battery sign indicating that his charge reduced to zero.
He rested his hand on his thighs and faced downward ‘this couldn’t get worse’ he felt and with this he took a look around to see whether that expensive looking hotel he saw was opened since the city was pretty alive by the time. As he was taking out his wallet to check the amount of change, a person stopped by the flower shop and was welcomed by the man who opened it a couple of minutes ago. Gray’s professional eyes got caught by the phone screen of the florist, he wondered whether what he saw was right.
Waiting would only waste his time, so with no further delay he jumped up and went in the flower shop. The florist/shopkeeper after clearing his previous customer addressed him in Italian.“Hello sir, we have dahlias, chrysanthemums, orchids, roses, cacti and many gardening accessories, what would you be interested in?” Gray asked him in Turkish ”Brother, you are Muslim right? -The florist was astonished and his response was affirmative through a head nod-. Do you know about any Halal cafe nearby?, I’m starving and my phone is out of charge”.The florist had a frown out of curiosity but that didn’t exist for long.“Well, there is a Turkish coffee shop that also serves sandwiches and croissant, its about 20 minutes of walking from here, located near the eastern down town subway, if you reach near the subway escalators, take a look at your left and you find the coffee shop welcoming you” Gray prepared to depart but before he actually did, the florist said with his arm extended towards his desk, pointing at a vacuum flask and a paper bag on the desk“if you will, you can share with me my tofu sandwich and green tea.” After a moment of thought, Gray replied “I accept your offer only if you don’t fall into trouble with your boss and if you provide me an outlet to charge my phone”.“Don’t worry I own this shop although I share profit with 2 others. You can charge your phone here with mine.” he replied letting Gray plug his phone to charge.“how did you know I’m from Turkey?”he asked “you are a Muslim got clear from the Holy Qur’an app on your phone the last time I saw you and your phone wallpaper and the paper weight lying on your desk has a white crescent and a star on a red background made me guess you’re Turkish” said Gray.”Nice observation skills, you can be a good florist if you try.” replied the florist.
As they settled and Gray got half way of finishing his sandwich, the florist asked Gray about him but Gray didn’t want to lie and wanted to avoid anything that brings out his identity so he started this way.”you can call me Gray and presently I’m searching for a place to stay, like a separate room with a bathroom attached to it but shared with none”, “Hehe that’s a funny name, people really go for small names, no doubt I’m older than you and people back when I was young kept long names, I’m Berkant Hasan for short. so you are searching for a place to stay, I suggest you to try it out of Milan, it’s pretty expensive here, what do you do? Look like a tourist guide to me”said the florist while surfing his phone and eating his sandwich”. No I’m not a tourist guide said Gray but what could he possibly say about more himself, he’s supposed to be elusive. Even thought his phone was only 15 percent charged then, he had a very strong urge to leave but he hesitated, the details that the phone carried would explain every query he had, people know he’s dead but what about his parents did they know anything? How could he inform them about it?, luckily the attention of Hasan went to a news report video that he played aloud which relieved Gray for a few seconds but caught his attention too ..
“...it took the fire fighters 6 continuous hours to extinguish the fire that blazed on the 3rd floor of the Lombardy residential suites 7 in Milan. The inspectors reported that the fire might have occurred due to a electrical short circuit because the gas line remained unaffected and one dead body found with no other casualties, the dead body found is assumed to be of a wanted 3C or Criminal Control Council investigator suspected to be involved with terrorism and human trafficking which leaves an almost closed case for the police. The head of the ministry of tourism Mr. Raphael Rodriguez said that tourist don’t need to worry about the..”
Gray heard it till here and made his way outside saying that it was really important for him to go and pack since he was searching for a cheaper place to live in.
On the way to his hotel he was thinking that how the media propaganda worked, the wanted man in the report was none other than he, the news report was 2 days and a night old.
Exactly the night before yesterday night, at 11:30 Gray received a message on phone that said get out of his room immediately with your very important belongings and Gray went out with his brown long coat with all his stuff in the pockets things he could collect were his mobile, glasses and he heard the front door getting picked and Alfa blue entering and without any explanation said to get out of the window and gave him the address of a hotel in Milan. All Gray could make out from the report was that Alfa Blue is trying to show that he was dead by keeping him alive but how could one possibly establish an identity, with all the finger prints and retinal scan, its not very difficult for 3C to carry out something like this. He didn’t know what was going to happen but all he knew that Allah was testing him and all he could do was to supplicate for the best.
